About Akademiet Sandvika

Akademiet Sandvika is an independent upper-secondary school in the centre of Sandvika, part of the Akademiet network of schools across Norway. Its students study a mixture of Norwegian and international curricula, and the school has a longstanding involvement in academic competitions, debate, and student-led initiatives. Akademiet MUN 2026 is the school's first formally hosted Model United Nations conference — organised, chaired, and run by its students.

The conference will be held across the school's main building and adjacent facilities, with all three committees, plenary sessions, and ceremonies taking place on a single connected campus.

Sandvika & Bærum

Sandvika is the administrative centre of Bærum, the municipality immediately west of Oslo. It sits where the Sandvikselva river meets the inner Oslofjord — a small, walkable town of around 14,000 residents, with a restored old quarter, a modern shopping district, and direct fjord access. Bærum as a whole is one of Norway's most prosperous municipalities and home to a number of international institutions, embassies' residences, and corporate headquarters.

Despite its size, Sandvika punches above its weight for visitors: it is quiet enough to feel like a town in its own right, and connected enough to Oslo that delegates can be in the capital in the time it takes to read this paragraph.

Getting here

Sandvika is about 13 kilometres west of central Oslo, and is one of the best-connected towns in the country.

  • From Oslo Central Station (Oslo S): direct local trains to Sandvika depart every few minutes throughout the day. Travel time is approximately 12–15 minutes.
  • From Oslo Airport, Gardermoen (OSL): Flytoget (the Airport Express train) runs directly to Sandvika in around 35 minutes, several times per hour.
  • By road: Sandvika sits on the E18 motorway. Driving from central Oslo takes 15–25 minutes depending on traffic.
  • From the train station to the school: Akademiet Sandvika is a short walk from Sandvika station. Detailed directions and a map will be sent to registered delegates closer to the conference.

Where to stay

For delegates travelling from outside the Oslo region, two options are most common.

  • Host families. Akademiet MUN offers a host-family programme for visiting delegates, matching them with families from the Akademiet community for the nights of the conference. Indicate your interest at registration.
  • Hotels in Sandvika. Thon Hotel Oslofjord, in central Sandvika, is the most convenient option for delegates booking their own accommodation. Several other hotels in Bærum and central Oslo are within a short train ride of the school.

Specific recommendations and any negotiated rates will be communicated to registered schools in advance of the conference.

Things to do

For delegates with time before or after the conference, Sandvika and the surrounding area repay a short visit.

  • Sandvika Old Town. The restored historic quarter along the river — wooden houses, small cafés, and the original 19th-century town centre.
  • Kalvøya. A small island park reached by a short bridge from Sandvika, popular for swimming, walking, and looking back at the town across the water.
  • Henie Onstad Kunstsenter. The Henie Onstad Art Centre at Høvikodden, a few minutes from Sandvika, holds one of Scandinavia's most significant collections of modernist and contemporary art.
  • Central Oslo. Fifteen minutes by train: the Opera House, the Munch museum, Aker Brygge, Vigeland Park, and the Royal Palace are all within easy reach for an afternoon.
